Calitri is one of the most distinctive villages in the Province of Avellino. Nestled on a mountain and kissed by sunshine, to the traveler's eye it looks like a color-filled terrace somewhat reminiscent of the Coast, but set in a mountain scenery. It's located on the easternmost border of Irpinia, where Campania gives way to Puglia and Basilicata. The town used to be a hub of trade and commerce where over the millennia people have created a multi-layer history along the narrow streets that climb up through the old center. That's where you can come across ancient caves still used to age Caciocavallo di Grotta, as well as ancient kilns, ceramic workshops and murals painted by local artists. Be sure to pay a visit to the castle, the remains of the ancient medieval village and the evocative "cupa", an underground district carved into the rock.
